So you think you'd like to breed your German Shepherd? We do occasionally offer breeding's to approved German Shepherd females. We are happy to help if we can, but we do have procedures to consider and follow if you're interested in using one of our males.
Contact us to discuss and make potential arrangements before your German Shepherd comes into heat. Females should be at lest two years old and have appropriate health testing done.
The first day your German Shepherd comes into heat, she will need to get into the veterinarian for a brucellosis test, a cervical culture and sensitivity. This cervical culture procedure involves a guarded swab collecting a sample from the female dog's vaginal tract, which is then sent off to IDEXX by your veterinarian. Yes, it must be IDEXX, not A&M or Antech. You'll have results back in a few days which will determine what all she may be carrying as far as bacterial infections and, if needed, what antibiotics are recommended to treat. This protects your female, our male, and the resulting puppies while they are developing in their mother. If you reach out to us after your dog has already been in heat for two weeks, for example, and want an immediate breeding, we will not be able to accommodate the breeding. The culture is non negotiable - we do cultures on every one of our female German Shepherds every time and the studs every few months. We will not do a breeding without those results.
Progesterone testing is also important and helpful for achieving the breedings at the correct time. Dogs ovulate later on in their heat cycle and are only fertile and receptive for a few days, and no two dogs are the same, so it's important to have the timing right, especially if you're traveling to get here. Your veterinarian can do a simple blood draw and send it to IDEXX and will have results back the next morning. The progesterone test lets us know when she should be ovulating.
German Shepherd stud fees can be discussed over the phone and are required to be paid in full as soon as a breeding occurs. We will not exchange for a puppy. The stud fee is to pay for the service of use of the male, there is no guaranteed number of puppies. We will normally do two breedings with a day off in between. Stud fees are non refundable for any reason. If pregnancy is not achieved, a second breeding can be done at no additional charge on the next heat cycle of the female. This applies to in person breedings only. The culture and sensitivity will be required again on that second breeding as well.
We can help recommend which stud may compliment your female or who may be a good choice to breed to. We do reserve the right to decline services for any reason, including, but not limited to, culture results that would be harmful to the stud or not conducive to achieving pregnancy.
Let us know if you have questions- we are more than happy to assist.
